Improvement of Green Spaces, Ecological Education, and Cleaning

Problem

One of the most severe environmental problems in Kačarevo was the existence of illegal dumps that jeopardized the nearby local water supply. Another problem was the storm sewer system that got clogged in winter, usually by garbage dumped by irresponsible citizens. There was a great need for more environmental awareness in order to make the clean environment sustainable.

Solution

Approximately a thousand cubic meters of garbage was removed from the illegal dumps and households to the local waste disposal site. Trees were planted around the dump as a wind barrier. Ditches were cleaned, the park beautified, and trees planted at the cemetery. The period leading up to Earth Day 2003 (April 12) was used to stress to citizens the importance of protecting the environment. 

Impact

Sanitary and environmental conditions in Kačarevo have improved. As a result of the educational environmental campaign that reached children, students and other residents, environmental awareness has been raised in support of local plans to maintain orderly waste disposal.
