Title

Alliance for Earth Day Environmental Action 2004

Problem

As Vojvodina is one of the region’s most environmentally-endangered areas, it faced a pressing need for public education and information about environmental problems, as well as discussion about possible solutions and individual citizens’ actions which contribute to the province’s overall environmental protection. However, public information representatives lacked sufficient knowledge on these issues, thereby limiting their ability to provide environmental outreaches to the public. Many citizens even suffer from serious health problems due to poor environmental conditions.

Solution

A Vojvodina-wide alliance of environmental organizations was organized which included: Foresters of Vojvodina, Vrsacki Breg, Vrelo, Youth Association of Vojvodina, Scouts, Friends of the Children, Ferijalni Savez Vojvodine, MOV, Josif Pancic Students’ Union, Science-research Association, Železničar Mountaineers, and the Association for the Tradition and Protection of Sremski Karlovci. The Alliance implemented a large-scale environmental action in Vojvodina including public education workshops, distribution of public information, and environmental clean-ups throughout 45 Vojvodina municipalities dealing with issues such as water contamination, waste disposal, weed removal, forestation, and beautification.

Impact

The public education and information activities and trainings organized by the Alliance for Earth Day action 2004, as well as the numerous individual community clean-ups, help increase environmental awareness in Vojvodina, thereby creating basis for sustainable environmental protection among citizens. In addition, educating media representatives enhances their ability to promote environmental protection among the wider public.
