Title

Construction of Animal Carcass Pit in Kustilj

Problem

Most of the 700 villagers of Kustilj raise farm animals. More than 500 cows, 800 pigs and 200 sheep and goats in the village means that large numbers of animals die and must be disposed of each year. The village carcass pit filled and was closed a few years ago. Animal carcasses, which naturally decompose in a properly constructed pit, were left exposed by villagers having no alternative means of disposal. The situation created a serious threat of infectious diseases in the village.

Solution

The village needed to construct a new animal carcass pit to dispose safely of dead animals outside of the village, ensuring safe environmental conditions within the village and preventing possible health hazards. Citizens of Kustilj are mobilized to participate in construction of the carcass pit.

Impact

The environmental situation in the village is preserved, and health hazards are averted. The building of an animal carcass pit prevents dogs and other animals from eating or dragging dead farm animals to areas where diseases might result.
